Jude 1:1

“Jude” is the English form of Judas, the Greek spelling of the honored tribal name Judah. Among several men of that name in the New Testament, the writer identifies himself by his brother. The James who needed no further description in the early church was the leader of the Jerusalem believers, the brother of the Lord (Acts 15:13; Galatians 1:19). The Gospels list a Judas among the brothers of Jesus (Matthew 13:55; Mark 6:3), so the writer is almost certainly that man. During Jesus’ ministry His brothers did not believe in Him (John 7:5). After the resurrection they are found praying with the disciples (Acts 1:14).

What Jude leaves unsaid is telling. He could have opened with his family tie to Jesus. Instead he calls himself “the servant of Jesus Christ,” a bondservant who belongs to a Master. The one who grew up in the same home now bows before Him as Lord. Such reticence carries its own authority: Jude speaks as one under orders, and that is the only standing he claims.

The readers are described before they are warned. The earliest manuscripts read “beloved in God the Father” where the KJV has “sanctified,” yet either reading fixes attention on what God has done. They are loved or set apart by the Father, “preserved in Jesus Christ,” and “called.” Each description places the initiative with God. The calling came from Him, the love rests on them from Him, and the keeping is His work.

This opening prepares for everything that follows. Jude is about to describe intruders, apostasy, and judgment in the sharpest language of the New Testament. Before a single warning is given, he assures the faithful that they are held. The word “preserved” will return in the command “keep yourselves in the love of God” (v. 21) and in the closing praise to Him “that is able to keep you from falling” (v. 24).

Word / Phrase Notes

τετηρημένοις (tetērēmenois) — preserved

The perfect participle describes people who have been kept and remain under guard. The phrase may mean kept by Christ or kept for Christ until His coming, and both ideas fit Jude’s purpose. The same verb family reappears in the letter, both for the faithful who must keep themselves (v. 21) and for the rebels reserved for judgment (vv. 6, 13).

κλητοῖς (klētois) — called

Jude places this word last for emphasis. In the New Testament it describes those who have heard and answered God’s summons in the gospel; it is a name for believers. Their identity begins with God’s call rather than with their own achievement.
